Performance Polymers
BTC Speciality Chemical Distribution sells and markets the full range of BASF performance polymers as well as selected complementary 3rd party performance polymers.
Multitude of different application fields for performance polymers
BTC offers a wide variety of performance polymers with customised performance profiles for different application fields.
Sokalan® types are watersoluble polymers based on the monomers acrylic acid, maleic acid, vinyl pyrrolidon, vinyl imidazole and hydrophobic olefins. The product group is predominantly used in detergents and cleaners, but also in many technical applications. Lupasol® types are cationic polymers with excellent adhesive properties.
Watersoluble cationic polymers: Lupasol® types
Lupasol® polymers are multi-functional, non-toxic cationic polymers based on ethylene imine with molecular weights from 800 to 2 mio. Da. Due to their strong and permanent binding to surfaces, they are exceptional adhesives. They can be used in a variety of applications such as laques, coatings, paint and glue systems, as primers for polymer compounds in film formation, and for surface modification in dyeing of plastics. With Lupasol® WF, FG, G20 wasserfrei and PR8515, BTC offers water-free products, the other types being aqeous solutions. Lupasol® SC-61 B is a modified polyethylene imine with reduced charge density.

Sokalan® PA types (water-soluble homopolymers of acrylic acid)
The Sokalan® PA polymers are water-soluble homopolymers of acrylic acid. They are very effective dispersing agents. The Sokalan® PA types have been found to perform very well in phosphate-free laundry detergents. Their pronounced dispersing effect prevents deposits from being formed on fabrics and also boosts detergency. The Sokalan® PA types can also be used in dishwasher detergents, technical cleaners and in water treatment applications by working as scale inhibitor and dispersing agent for sparingly soluble salts. Sokalan® PA types can be used to treat the full range of scaling problems encountered in the sugar industry.
Socalan® CP types (acrylic acid copolymers)
BTC’s Socalan® CP types are used to prevent soil redesposition on fabrics and scale formation in the washing machines.
The Sokalan® CP types are water-soluble copolymers of acrylic acid and maleic acid. High-performance laundry detergents can be formulated with combinations of Sokalan® CP types, soda and Zeolite A. The products supplied in granular form can be used to increase the bulk density of detergent formulations, and they can also enhance the friability of detergents in tablet form. Compact and ultra-compact detergent formulations are on the market due to the development of the Sokalan® CP types. The Sokalan® CP types prevent fabrics from stiffness as a result of incrustation. They prevent soil redesposition on fabrics and scale formation in the washing machines.
Sokalan® HP types (water-soluble homo- and copolymers of vinylpyrrolidone, vinylimidazole and nonionic monomers)
The Sokalan® HP range is particularly effective in preventing reactive and direct dyes from being transferred on clean fabrics by forming polymer/dye associates in the wash liquor.

Tamol® N types (sulphonic acid derivatives)
With the Tamol® product range (Tamol® NN types and Tamol® NH types) and the Sokalan® product range of BASF, BTC offers products for stabilisation and dispersion of aqueous dispersions and emulsions as well as scale inhibitors and inhibitors for dye transfer. The Tamol® N types are sodium salts of naphthalenesulphonic acid condensation products. They differ in terms of their degree of condensation, degree of neutralisation and their salt content. The Tamol® NN types have a low degree of condensation, and they are mainly employed as dispersing agents and stabilisers in the leather, textile, paint and paper sectors. Tamol® NH types are special products with a high degree of condensation that can be used for stabilisation of emulsions and dispersions as well as for the construction industry.

Polymer modifiers: Joncryl® types
Joncryl® polymer modifiers improve production processing and help sustain the business of the plastic industry.
The Joncryl® polymer modifiers improve melt strength; hence better processing (including extrusion, blow molding and thermoforming) of polycondensation polymers and bio polymers. They stabilize polycondensates and biopolymer blends thus enhancing the mechanical properties of the material. Polymer modifiers also ensure stability of polycondensates during manufacturing and protect against hydrolytic degradation and loss of properties. Polymer modifiers allow permanent enhancement of engineering thermoplastics viscoelasticity with high compatibility of the polymer and modify adhesives and sealants as durable tackifiers. Joncryl® allows homogenous distribution of pigments, fillers, and particles in polymeric matrices. Polymer modifiers reduce cycle time and improve surface quality in injection-molded parts while maintaining transparency and heat stability. Joncryl® types are solvent-free; colourless liquid or solid materials with no heavy metals and low level of impurities and free of volatile components.
Joncryl® polymer modifiers provide cost effective benefits to the plastic industry:
- Shorter cycle time in injection molding
- Increase extrusion line speed
- Reduce internal stress during packaging and cooling
- Improve compatibility between fillers and thermoplastics
- Maintain transparency and mechanical properties
Joncryl® chain extenders series (ADR)
A polymer modifier that raises the molecular weight of polycondensation polymers via reactive processing, providing higher melt strength and allowing for:
- Higher regrind/recycle usage to lower material costs
- Upgrading lower molecular weight polycondensation polymers.
- Compatibilization of polycondensate alloys
- Improved hydrolytic stability
- Increased flexibility to process PLA and other biodegradable polymers
Joncryl® flow modifiers series (ADF, ADD, ADP)
This polymer modifier can increase flowability of different types of plastics and bring different benefits:
- ADF - Flow enhancers that reduce viscosity, e.g. PS, HIPS, PC/ABS, PBT
- ADP - Plasticizers: non-migrating polymers that permanently improve the flexibility of resins, e.g. T-ABS, PVC, ASA, SAN
- ADD - Dispersants that improve wetting properties of polymer matrix esp. filled engineered plastics, for filler and colorants and flow improvement of PA and polyesters.
