BTC´s nonionic surfactants are derived from natural and synthetic alcohols. They are used in cleaning agents due to their strong washing performance and reduced foaming properties. They act mainly in combination with anionic surfactants in the detergents and cleaning industry.

BTC’s product portfolio covers the following petrochemical nonionic surfactants:

 

Lutensol® TO grades (C13-oxo alcohol ethoxylates) are nonionic surfactants. They are based on saturated iso-C13-alcohol providing a low, medium and high EO degree. EO degrees of medium and high are water-diluted grades to keep the liquid form. According to their structure they are used where wetting, emulsification and soil removal power is needed.

 

Lutensol® AO grades (C13-15 oxo alcohol ethoxylates) are nonionic surfactants. They are based on C13C15 oxo alcohol which consists of approx. 65% C13 and approx. 33% C15 providing a low and medium EO degree. Below 7 mol EO they are cloudy colourless liquids at 23°C and have a tendency to form sediment, but at 50°C they form clear solutions. Clear liquids are achieved when diluting with water. With an EO degree of 8 mol and more they are of colourless pastes. The products provide classical wetting and emulsification properties.

 

Lutensol® M grades (C10-18 fatty alcohol ethoxylates) are nonionic surfactants. They are alkyl polyethylene glycol ethers made from a C10-18 alcohol and ethylene oxide. They are available with the ethoxylation degree 5 and 7 mols EO. The products become clear liquids at 60°C. Lutensol® M grades provide wetting and soil removal properties as well as excellent emulsification properies.

 

Lutensol® XP grades (C10-Guerbet alcohol ethoxylates) are nonionic surfactants. They are alkyl polyethylene glycol ether based on C10 Guerbet alcohol and ethylene oxide and are available with a low, medium and high EO degree. Dependent on the EO degree the non diluted grades are cloudy liquids or yellowish pastes which become clear at 50°C. Water diluted grades, indicated by the index XP ..9, are clear liquids at room temperature. Those products provide excellent dynamic and wetting properties. Contrary to other nonionic surfactants the XP types provide high cmc values (critical micelle concentration).

 

Lutensol® XL grades (C10-Guerbet alcohol alkoxylates) are nonionic surfactants. They are alkyl alkoxylates based on C10 Guerbet alcohol and are available with a versatile alkoxylation degree. In dependency on EO degree the non diluted grades are cloudy liquids or slightly yellowish pastes which become clear at 50°C. The water diluted grades, indicated by the index XL ..9, are clear liquids at room temperature. Those products provide excellent wetting properties and solubilizing properties. Due to their less smelling character formulations with sensivity to odour can be prepared with such grades.

 

Lutensol® XA grades (C10-Guerbet alcohol alkoxylates) are nonionic surfactants. The alkoxylation degree is low and they are narrow range ethoxylates. Excellent wetting and fast soil removal properties are provided. In addition those products are weak smelling.

 

Lutensol® ON grades (C10-oxo alcohol ethoxylates) are nonionic surfactants. They are alkyl polyethylene glycol ethers made from a saturated synthetic short-chain fatty alcohol. They are available with low and medium EO degree. The available grades with low EO degree are clear or cloudy colourless liquids, others are pastes. Due to the short chain the products provide dynamic and wetting behavior.

Dehydol® LS grades (C12-14 fatty alcohol ethoxylates) are nonionic surfactants. They are alkyl polyethylene glycol ethers made from saturated native fatty alcohol. Thus their C-chain is linear and even numbered. They are available with low and medium EO-degree. The available grades are liquid. Dehydol® LS grades are providing wetting and emulsification properties with a good soil removal property.

 

Dehydol® LT grades (C12-18 fatty alcohol ethoxylates) are nonionic surfactants. They are alkyl polyethylene glycol ethers made from saturated native alcohol. Thus their C-chain is linear and even numbered. They are available with low and medium EO-degree. Grades of medium EO degree are cloudy and tend to form sediment. Above 40°C they become a clear liquid. Dehydol® LT grades provide wetting and soil removal properties as well excellent emulsification performance.

 

Glucopon® grades (alkyl polyglucoside) are nonionic surfactants. They are alkyl polyglucoside made from saturated native alcohol and glucose. The used linear alcohol chain varies from C8-10, C12-14 to C8-14. The liquid versions are diluted with water providing an active matter content from 50% to 70%. Non bleached grades are indicated by the index “DK” and are brownish liquids, whereas the bleached grades are colourless to yellowish liquids. Contrary to fatty alcohol ethoxylates their foaming property is much stronger. In addition they have excellent solubilizing and film forming properties.

 

Lutensol® AT grades (C16-18 fatty alcohol ethoxylates) are nonionic surfactants. They are alkyl polyethylene glycol ethers made from a linear, saturated C16C18 fatty alcohol and are available from medium EO degree to high EO degree. Due to their chemical constitution Lutensol® AT grades are solid and available in powder form or in flakes. The products provide both emulsification and dispersing properties.

 

Lutensol® M grades (C10-18 fatty alcohol ethoxylates) are nonionic surfactants. They are alkyl polyethylene glycol ethers made from a C10-18 alcohol and ethylene oxide. They are available with the ethoxylation degree 5 and 7. The products become clear liquids at 60°C. Lutensol® M grades provide wetting and soil removal properties as well as excellent emulsification properties.

Considering the alkyl chain and the degree of ethoxylation respectively alkoxylation the properties change with respect to chain lengths and alkoxylation degree. The detergency performance is provided by nonionics with medium degree of alkoxylation. With respect to ethoxylation or alkoxylation the foaming and wetting qualities are affected. Alkyl polyglucosides are nonionic surfactants without ethoxylated units and give strong foaming property whereas other nonionics provide less foaming properties. In general nonionic surfactants are 100% active or in dependency on their alkoxylation degree water-diluted solutions. Further dilution with water is possible. In some cases extra energy is needed to overcome the gelling phase. In addition to the less sensivity of water hardness nonionics are less sensitive against pH values. They do not decompose in acidic or alkaline conditions.

 

Applications

The variety of cleaning applications in the industry induces the use of nonionic surfactants.

With our versatile product grades we offer outstanding detergency and cleaning quality to manufacture liquid dishwashing and technical cleaning agents as well as liquid duty detergents. According to the temperature of the application the cloud point of each product determines the performance. Because of their lower sensivity against water hardness the products are suited for a wide range of cleaning applications. Especially the short fatty alcohol products show fast action in water containing solutions. In cases where less foam is needed at temperatures below 40°C or even at higher temperatures BTC’s broad portfolio of nonionic surfactants offers the right product.
