Fatty acids are classified in three different groups: Saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids. The polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) could be separated in Omega-6 fatty acids and Omega-3 fatty acids.
Saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids can be synthesized by the human body. In contrast Omega-3 fatty acids can nearly not be synthesized in the human body and must come from the diet trough foods and supplements. In the western diet people have normally a very low intake of Omega-3 fatty acids.
Sources for omega-3 fatty acids are plant oils and marine oils. Soybean, rapeseed and walnut oil have a high content of α-linolenic acid (ALA). The fatty acid ALA is an essential nutrient and humans are not able to synthetize it. ALA can be transformed to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). But the conversion is very low, therefore the fatty acids EPA and DHA can be reconsidered as essential. The only sources for EPA and DHA are marine oils.
Omega-3 fatty acids are important structural components of the phospholipid cell membranes of the tissues. The composition of the phospholipids influences the characteristics of the cell membrane as fluidity and permeability to other molecules.
DHA is one of the major PUFA in the brain, nervous tissue and retina. It seems that DHA is essential for the visual process in the retina and for proper brain functioning.
EPA is a precursor for eicosanoids. These are substances which play an important role in processes like the blood pressure, renal function, blood coagulation, inflammatory and immunological reactions. Eicosanoids derived out of EPA have anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic, vasodilatory and triglyceride lowering properties. Due to these effects a high consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids are related to a lower risk for a cardiovascular diseases. For Omega-3, there is a lot of excellent scientific evidence available, which proves the effect of Omega-3 for many health concerns along all life stages.
Consequences of a omega-3 fatty acids deficiency
The risk of developing n-3 fatty acid deficiency is higher in babies and children than in adults. Visible signs of deficiency have only been observed in seriously ill patients on a special fat-free diet for several months. The patients were seen to develop extensive inflammation of the skin, ulcers, reduced visual acuity, disturbed superficial and depth sensibility, muscular weakness, and trembling. The main risk groups for essential fatty acid deficiency are premature babies and babies who are not breast-fed.
