Air Release Agent for the thermoset composites

BTC’s Efka® air release agents are used to suppress and destroy foam and its negative effects during application in the thermoset composites. By removing or inhibiting air bubbles they are important process aids throughout the production as well as the applications process. Manufacturers benefit from foam-free production processes by reaching their desired results much quicker.

Dispex® Ultra

Properties

BTC’s Efka® and Dispex® Ultra dispersing agents are used to wet, stabilize and increase loading of pigments and other fillers in the thermoset composites. For formulators they represent an essential component as they provide colour strength, gloss, viscosity stability and prevent sedimentation of fillers (e.g. glass fibers).

Substrate wetting agents and surface modifiers for the thermoset composites

Efka® types are used as wetting agents and surface modifiers. They prevent surface defects during the application of the composites and optimize the profile of the dry surface.

Photo initiators

UV-curing is one of the most rapidly growing technologies in the thermoset composites and other related industries. UV-curing systems have been used to dramatically increase curing speeds and develop environmentally friendly technology.

Irgacure®

Properties

UV-curing technology enables curing of thick-pigmented gel coat (white, gray and pastel shades). The maximum thickness cured with UV-curing technology (gel coat with 10-15% pigment concentration) is around 800 microns wet. This can be achieved by using the right combination and concentration of Irgacure® photoinitiators (eg. BAPO and Alpha-Hydroketones). For other shades (red, green, blue and yellow) the maximum thickness achieved today is 150-200 microns wet (at 5 to 8% pigment concentration).

Applications

Irgacure® photoinitiators are used for UV-curable thermoset composites and for pigmented and energy-curable composites in combination with clear-coat light.

Properties

Ultraviolet light can initiate chemical reactions in polymers which result in their breakdown and loss of their chemical and physical properties.
Chimassorb® range are benzophenone chemistry based UV light stabilizers. Chimassorb® are effective in thick thermoset composites applications.
Uvinul® range are both UV-light stabilizers and HALS. Uvinul provide a low initial colour for low pigment content composites and for transparent composites applications.
The Tinuvin® range of light stabilizers and HALS provide highly effective protection against UV absorption in the thermoset composites for both interior and exterior composites applications.

Halogen-free flame retardants for the thermoset composites

Environmental pressure on halogenated flame retardants has created demand for halogen-free formulations, especially in coating and composite applications. Taking a systems approach, formulators can design efficient flame retardant blends that offer synergistic performance benefits in mid- to high-Tg resin systems without the use of halogens. The use of Melapur® performs well, when UV stabilization is required. Melapur® has no impact on aging.
