Polyalkylene glycols as building blocks, rheology modifiers > for technical formulations

BTC´s (alkyl) polyalkylene glycol (PAG) types are derived from synthetic feedstock like alkylene oxides (EO or PO). Depending on molecular weight and on molecular structure the properties are different. For example, a PAG can contain a reactive (vinylic or allylic) end group or consist of a terminated end group whereas the other side of the molecule provides functionality. Thus they are also to be considered as mono, di and tri functional building block.

Due to their structure polyalkylene glycols are not classified as surfactants usually. Using PAG as an educt for a reaction with a lipophilic group they can be transferred into a molecule providing amphiphilic properties, for example PAG-ester.

Properties of our polyalkylene glycols

BTC’s Pluriol® grades are polyalkylene glycols or modified (alkyl) polyalkylene glycols.

Pluriol® A…E grades are used as feedstock in the production of comb polymers, which are applied as dispersing agents and plasticizers for concrete. Their low diol content prevents unwanted side reactions. They are also used to modify the chain length of polyurethanes.

Pluriol® A…PE grades are EO/PO copolymers with a single terminal alkyl group. They are soluble in water and they have a low viscosity in spite of their high molar mass. Pluriol® A…PE  grades have an excellent lubricating ability. They are nonionic, which allows them to be used in combination with anionic and cationic additives.

Pluriol® A…TE grades are trifunctional polyethylene glycols based on trimethylolpropane or glycerine. Each molecule contains three hydroxyl groups which are able to participate in a variety of chemical reactions, especially in esterification. Triacrylic and trimethacrylic esters of the Pluriol A...TE grades can be used as crosslinking agents in the production of super absorbers or as reactive diluents in UV-curing coatings. In addition Pluriol A…TE grades are applied in formulations used in the textile industry, for example as non wetting additives for processing cotton.

Pluriol® A…R grades are reactive alkoxylates and diols based on allyl alcohol or butyne-1,4-diol. They can be copolymerized readily with other products. Furthermore they are suitable as reactive components in additional reactions. All Pluriol® A … R grades have a low conductivity

Pluriol® A…VP  types have an excellent plasticizing ability. They are therefore very effective for use as building block for aqueous polymerdispersions and provide an excellent film formation of the final application e. of paints and binders for the coatings industry (especially industrial and automotive coatings). They are used in the formulations of binder manufacturers and manufacturers of industrial and automotive coatings. Pluriol® A…VP  types are low-odour plasticizers respectively coalescent solvents with a low VOC content. They have a good compatibility with a very wide range of binders and polymers. They are virtually salt-free and non-volatile.

Pluriol® E grades are water-soluble polyethylene glycols. They consist of a versatile range of products. Depending on their molar mass, they can be applied as solubilizers, plasticizers, binders, humectants, lubricants, dispersing agents, and mould-release agents. They are used to modify the consistency of liquids and to impregnate materials. They can also be applied as organic intermediates in the manufacture of polyesters and polyurethanes and more. The Pluriol® E grades are supplied in solid, paste and liquid form. The solid products are available in powder form, flakes, or cast solids in order to suit the particular requirements.

Pluriol® P grades are used in a wide variety of processes in the chemical and allied industries. Depending on their molar mass, polypropylene glycols can have a foam-suppressing, lubricating, and a mould-release ability. They can be converted into monoesters, diesters, ethers, acetals, and polyurethanes. They find applications as heat-transfer fluids, refrigerants, hydraulic fluids, and solubilizers, and they can be used to modify the consistency of other liquids. They are also excellent dispersing agents for pigments.

Applications of our polyalkylene glycols

BTC’s Pluriol® polyalkylene glycols are used in formulations for chemical processing applications. They are applied as an educt to produce super plasticizers or as a plasticizer itself. Polyalkylene glycols (PAG) are used in formulations in the textile industry and in the plastics industry to provide lubrication properties. In focussing on the reactive units they can be applied as co-monomers in emulsion polymerization processes, or as an educt to synthesize specialties like UV-curing resins which are special esters of acrylic acid.
