Tinuvin 1600 – UV protection that lasts decades

Polymers are a miracle resource for modern architecture. Almost every glass surface can be replaced by plastic, its diversity leaves nothing to be desired: transparent like glass, available in a wide range of colours and playful forms - almost anything is possible. Additionally, plastics weigh much less than traditional materials. Additives are essential during manufacturing processes so that the surfaces can maintain their exquisite look despite being exposed to decades of changing weather conditions and sunlight. One such additive is Tinuvin 1600 UV protection included in the portfolio of BTC Europe, BASF SE's sales company for special chemicals and finishing polymers.

In demand for football stadiums and shopping centres

"The high level of radiation that Tinuvin 1600 absorbs makes it the most powerful UV protection within our portfolio" explains Alfred Oertli, Business Manager Plastics Industry Europe at BTC. The additive with excellent resistance to heat has particularly incited interest in the construction industry - from large-scale shopping centres and office buildings to football stadiums and high-quality greenhouses. "Many large buildings these days not only contain glass surfaces but also a considerable number of transparent surfaces made of plastics", says Oertli.

However, high-performance UV protection is also used in the automotive industry and generally in places where plastics have to resist changing weather conditions for long periods of time, such as on window frames and solar cell panels. During the manufacturing process, Tinuvin 1600 is added to melted plastic and interacts well, even in high concentrations, with a number of polymers including polyester, polycarbonates, acrylic and other base materials, without any problems.

Tinuvin's properties at a glance:

  • High-performance UV protection from the triazine class which effectively absorb rays with a wavelength of 290 to 350 nanometres
  • Can be used with a wide range of polymers such as polycarbonates, PET and acrylics.
  • The ideal solution for all those surfaces that need to withstand years and decades of different weather conditions.
