More and more people are turning their back on animal-based products in favour of a vegan lifestyle. This trend is not only changing the food industry but is also paving the way for innovative products. With the new algae DHA, BTC offers a vegan alternative to conventional fish oils: an omega-3 fatty acid in the form of algae oil.
The positive effect of omega-3 fatty acids on health is scientifically proven. Among other things, these essential fats protect cardiovascular functions and prevent dementia. An increased intake of omega-3 fatty acids, in particular docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), is recommended during pregnancy and in infancy, as this supports the development of the eyes and brain. Omega-3 fatty acids are primarily used in functional foods such as those for athletes, babies and in dietary supplements.
Use of omega-3 is already established in the Asian market and is now also expanding in Europe: Here, too, more and more baby foods are enriched with the fatty acids. The utilization of algae oil in baby foods is strictly regulated in the EU: Algae DHA from BASF is one of only two products from Western producers that are approved for the European market.
Algae DHA is derived exclusively from the fermented microalgae Schizochytrium sp. In contrast to fish oil, algae oil is not contaminated with metallic substances. The innovative recipe also has further advantages:
